MinBC Offers Support to Agri - Competitiveness Project
Mindanao Business Council Executive Director Jason C. Magnaye recently met with ACDI/VOCA Regional Director for South East Asia Adam Keatts for a consultation on the study being conducted by the said organization on the Value Chain Analysis of the priority crops – coconut, cocoa and rice.
The study is being initiated in relation to the forthcoming implementation of ACDI/VOCA’s 3-year CoCoPal project in Mindanao which is being supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), under the Food for Progress Program.
During the meeting, Magnaye shared the interventions being extended by the Council in partnership with the various local coconut industry associations and the Philippine Coconut Authority in improving the quality and competitiveness of the coconut industry.
“We have seen the unfolding of various high value products especially in the coconut industry. However, our farmers remain to be dependent on the copra commodity as a major coconut by-product. Through this project, we hope to be able to expose our farmers to the new, emerging high-value products and identify the necessary interventions to make it happen”, Magnaye shared.
The CoCoPal project, which will focus on the areas of Southern and Western Mindanao, is named after the Cocoa, Coconut and the Palayamanan concept of diversified rice-based farming. The said project intends to improve the income and food security of 25,000 farmers through diversified rice and corn based farming systems approach called Palayamanan, linked to a value chain approach.
With MinBC being the organizer of the Mindanao Coconut Summit held last year in Mati, Davao Oriental and convenor of the Mindanao Confederation of Coconut Farmers (MCCF), Mr. Magnaye shared the Council’s advocacy in addressing the pressing issues that affects the coconut industry which has led to the conduct of the 1st Mindanao Coconut Summit in Mati, Davao Oriental in July last year. Mr. Magnaye also expressed his willingness to support the CoCoPal project of which he believes would be another invaluable contribution in further strengthening of the Mindanao coconut industry.
