MinBC Renews Cooperation with United States Commercial Services

Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) Chairman Vicente T. Lao and Executive Director Jason C. Magnaye recently met with United States Commercial Services Senior Commercial Officer Patrick T. Wall to discuss possible areas of partnership including the promotion of clean and renewable energy technologies and solutions in Mindanao.
Mr. Wall met with the MinBC officials to promote ASEAN Clean Energy Trade, Technology and Investment Forum on April 19-21, 2010 at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Manila. Participants to the Forum will meet ASEAN policymakers and project sponsors and be introduced to the best practices and finance options to help meet the region's growing energy needs. The forum seeks to promote clean and renewable energy technologies and solutions in the ASEAN region.
During the meeting, Mr. Lao shared the Council’s recent campaign in addressing the island-wide power shortage that is currently affecting both the business and general public. He added that MinBC would be very much willing to work with the trade and promotion arm of the US Government in bringing in more investments on power generation, especially those focusing on
renewable energy sources.
“The MinBC, being the convenor of the Mindanao Electric Power Alliance (MEPA), is even open to the idea of exploring all sustainable and responsible energy sources in helping address the power situation of Mindanao.”, Mr. Lao added.
The MEPA, an organization formally created during the 1st Mindanao Power Summit in Cagayan de Oro City last 2-3 December 2009, is a multi-stakeholder body composed of local electric cooperatives, distribution utilities, power generating companies and business organizations that aims to work together and collectively pursue programs that aim to preserve the reliability
and affordability of power in Mindanao. The Alliance has also been actively involved on talks related to the impending privatization of the Agus-Pulangi Hydro Power Complex in Iligan City.
